Description

Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in Beaune in 1880, is one of Burgundy's great family-owned wine houses. For four generations, the Drouhin family has crafted wines with the ambition of expressing Burgundy's remarkable terroirs with precision, elegance and authenticity. With a portfolio spanning more than 90 appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers an exceptional journey through Burgundy, from regional appellations to the most prestigious Premier and Grand Crus.

The Maison has been awarded the Grappe d'Or by Gault&Millau, recognising the excellence of its wines and its place among Burgundy's leading producers.

Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the rarest Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. Covering less than three hectares, this tiny square vineyard is completely surrounded by the appellation's other Grand Crus, at the very heart of one of Burgundy's most prestigious terroirs. Although its name naturally recalls the Morello cherry, one of the wine's signature aromas, its true origin lies elsewhere: "Griotte" derives from "Criots", an ancient word referring to hard chalky limestone, sharing the same linguistic root as the French word craie (chalk). Here, etymology and geology perfectly meet. The shallow reddish-brown soils over hard limestone produce a Pinot Noir combining remarkable intensity, finesse and extraordinary persistence.

Tasting

Appearance: Deep, luminous ruby colour, typical of an expressive and concentrated Côte de Nuits Grand Cru.

Nose: Complex and subtle aromatics, with hints of cherry liqueur and preserved cherry, complemented by delicate fine leather and nutmeg notes — with age, nuances of truffle and game can emerge.

Palate: Broad and elegant on entry, with present but never harsh tannins, a silky texture and long persistence. Flavours are rich with ripe red and black fruit, reflecting the generous 2023 vintage.

Food & Wine Pairing: Excellent with rich, structured dishes such as game in sauce, roast beef, hare stew, or well‑aged cheeses — pairing that matches the wine’s aromatic intensity.
