Description
Founded in 1858 in Elciego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Marqués de Riscal is one of Spain’s historic wine estates. A pioneer from its earliest days, the House played a major role in modernising Rioja by introducing Bordeaux winemaking techniques. Barón de Chirel perfectly embodies this innovative spirit: first created in 1986, it has become one of the estate’s flagship wines and now celebrates its 40th anniversary with this special edition.
Barón de Chirel 2021 – 40th Anniversary Special Edition is an exceptional Rioja produced predominantly from Tempranillo, complemented by other varieties. The grapes come from selected vineyards around Elciego and Laguardia, including Garcimoracho, Castejones, San Pelayo, Vialba, La Collada and Patas Negras. Situated between 450 and 550 metres above sea level, the vineyards lie on clay-limestone soils and gravelly alluvial terraces of the Ebro River over limestone substrata. Extremely low yields of just 2,500–3,500 kg/ha contribute to the wine’s remarkable concentration and depth.
Tasting
Appearance: Deep, bright and clean cherry red with vibrant violet highlights reflecting the youthful character of the vintage.
Nose: Highly complex and intense, revealing cassis, blueberry, black plum and cherry alongside graphite, liquorice and delicate mineral notes. With aeration, violet, black pepper and clove emerge, followed by subtle cocoa, tobacco and undergrowth. The oak is discreet, elegant and beautifully integrated.
Palate: Ample, deep and enveloping, with a firm yet elegant structure. Concentrated, silky tannins provide impressive length, while vibrant acidity brings freshness, energy and balance. The finish is long and distinguished, with lingering black fruit and balsamic notes.
Food Pairing: Excellent with cured ham, mature cheeses, red meats, poultry and game such as partridge, rabbit, venison, wild boar or roe deer, including dishes served with spicy sauces.
