Description
The Vineyard of São Lázaro owes its name to the fact that in this vineyard there is a small chapel from the 13th century, dedicated to the saint São Lázaro, protector of the sick and most needy. This is a 1.5ha plot of Touriga Nacional, planted surrounding the walls of the Castle of Estremoz, on a slope facing south and with soil of clayey origin.
João Portugal Ramos plants the first 5 hectares of vineyards in Estremoz, where he has lived since 1988, starting his personal project. Estremoz is the first place chosen by João Portugal Ramos to make his own wines, after his long career as a consulting oenologist in the creation of wines in the main wine-growing regions of Portugal.
João Portugal Ramos Group wines are present all over the world, being leaders in sales of Portuguese wines in some countries.
Today, the winemaker has two of his five children by his side, João Maria in the oenology department and Filipa in the marketing department, continuing the family business.
Tasting
Appearance: Deep and intense dark red colour, almost densely ruby — typical of a well-ripened Touriga Nacional. Good opacity and brightness.
Nose: Rich and expressive aromas of ripe black fruits (blackberry, blueberry), sometimes morello cherry, complemented by subtle floral notes, a herbal touch typical of the variety (dried herbs, garrigue), and more complex hints of truffle, spice, and toasted wood from ageing.
Palate: Full and generous on the attack, with a dense and velvety texture. The wine reveals a well-built structure, smooth yet present tannins, and well-balanced acidity — offering both power and freshness.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, roast lamb, game, sauced dishes, or aged cheeses. Also excellent with Mediterranean cuisine or rustic stews.
Serving Temperature: Serve between 16 °C and 18 °C to balance fruit, tannins, and structure harmoniously.
